DARTH DADDY's CUSTOMIZING CORNER: RESIN CASTS, 3D PRINTED ACCESSORIES & PLAYSETS

Customizing action figures can be quite expensive.  Especially if you have to buy a $15 action figure and the only piece that you need is the head.  To avoid breaking the bank, advanced customizers will sometimes make a mold of the piece that they need, and then reproduce the required part with plastic cast resin. I have made a few casts of my own over the years creating things like: extra Clone Wars Chancellor Palpatine heads, Weequay pirate heads, and the lightsaber hilts for my General Pong Krell custom action figure.  Creating casts can be both cost effective and a huge time saver.

Several customizing artists have begun to sell their cast pieces to the public and their offerings are just awesome.  Over the years, I have bought cast pieces from many of these artists.

This week, I thought I'd share with you some of the artists that I have purchased from to provide you with a resource that can help you enhance your own collections and give you the ability to acquire some of these pieces for your own. From assorted head casts to accessories and full blown playsets, these guys offer it all.  Below are pictures with samples of each artists work as well as their names and links to the online stores.  I figured with tax returns coming in, I'd offer you all the opportunity to acquire some of these great items. Happy shopping!

CAFN: Episode 48 - Black Lights!

CAFN: Episode 48 - Black Lights!

Well CAFN planned on having a lighting roundtable and while they apologize for that not happening, they were able to discuss a few interesting UV and glow paint techniques thanks to Clonehead. Of course they had to unload about the new 6-inch line announced by Hasbro.  CAFN wants to thank Clonehead, Luke Sprywalker, and later SpookyMufu for checking in to give us their views on this new announcement. And stay tuned folks, CAFN is not giving up on bringing you a dedicated podcast on how to light up your stuff!

If you haven't seen the brand new and improved CAFN Page yet, be sure to give it a look.

CAFN: Episode 46 - 2012: The Action Figure Year In Review

CAFN: Episode 46

Join Lucasclones and Tamer as they have their first ever "Top Ten Figures of the Year Show".  Lucasclones, Zedhatch, Tamer, and Clonehead talk about the figures they thought were worthy. Dad was really honored and completely shocked when Lucasclones said that Dad's Mother Talzin was his favorite custom action figure from 2012.  It was even cooler when CAFN mentioned me as an up and coming artist! If you haven't seen the brand new and improved CAFN Page yet, be sure to give it a look.

CAFN Episode 27- CAFN Roundtable - Parts Casting Masters

STAR WARS PODCASTS

Custom Action Figure News' first run at the roundtable hit a few glitches, and unfortunately, never saw the light of day. We have a feeling it was really awesome, but since both of their recorders crapped out, the world will never know.  Originally Remco of Incom's Customs and Doc Outlands participated on the roundtable, but they weren't available to come back for the redo. Good news is CAFN's new recorder seems to be awesome and they are back in business. Thankfully, Sith_fire30 and Clonehead were still available for the second attempt. If they could not have come on there would have no roundtable.  We here at CFTK were super happy to listen to this particular episode because it focused on the latest aspect of action figure customizing that we are looking to add to our repertoire.

Enjoy!

CLONEHEAD ADDED TO "CUSTOMS I WISH I OWNED"

Clint Conrad, known as Clonehead at imperialshipyards.net, has been a Star Wars custom maker for about 5-6 years now. He got into doing Star Wars customs when trying to promote his ebay store, he noticed how much hype and traffic that other seller's Star Wars custom figures and vehicles were getting. Being a lover of plastic modeling in his youth, especially of military armor models, clint figured that he could put his painting and building skills to the test and try to make a custom figure to sell on ebay. Well, the experiment worked and within a year he had made and sold at least 100 customs "some with dioramas" to buyers in at least 30 different countries. 4-5 years ago, a buyer directed clint to a star wars collecting and custom forum where he posted alot of work and met the admin of the future imperialshipyards where he was invited to form and moderate the customs and diorama boards when the site was created.

Sometime before the Imperial Shipyards site was born, Clint was having a hard time finding some of the parts from hard to find figures that he wanted to incorporate into his customs so, having a little knowledge of molding and casting from his military modeling days, Clint started making parts to use on his custom figures. It wasn't too long after that Clint decided to start selling his castings to the other custom makers and has ever since. You can find auctions for these parts in his ebay store and now at his resin parts for sale thread at imperialshipyards.net

CLONEHEAD

Clint has posted custom work at several sites but as moderator, considers himself at home at the shipyards where he has placed pics and wip commentary in his custom figures reloaded thread, his Clonehead's custom figures #2 thread, and in his Clonehead's dioramas thread, all at imperialshipyards.net.
